Evidence is the testimonies and sermons of biblical, historical, and present day persons who bear witness to the fact that those who are Born again (who have the life of Christ indwelling their souls) will have the power to overcome Sin. The importance of hearing from Historical figures who have ‘experienced’ being free from Sin is they add ‘weight’ to the discussion.
Although, their journeys are quite different, they all had to enter through the ‘strait gate’ of repentance of personal sins and the forsaking process of their whole lives before they were set free. If one were to read their autobiographies, and do a CSI investigation into their testimony, you would find they all completed the components of the ‘Salvation Equation’ even though they used different terms and expressions to describe each section. Some took years and years (the Mystics) to proceed from one step to the next mainly because they didn’t understand what the steps were or what the end result was to be. The church in their time was dead, blind, and full of Sin (like our church is today) so they were alone, as solo explorers, on this journey to true holiness. The church not only was unable to guide them, they and their errant doctrines of Sin became their main opponent. The sinful church hates true inward holiness more that it hates Sin itself. It would rather ‘kill’ the messenger than to admit their tremendous errors on Sin and holiness. Many of these ‘preachers of holiness’ were heavily persecuted by the church and ‘professing christians’, some were kicked out of their denominations, some had dead animals and tomatoes thrown at them while they preached, others were whipped and put in prison, and others were killed in horrendous fashion, even burned at the stake.
Evidence will also be given of what a ‘professing christian’ looks and lives like. A ‘professing Christian’ is one who has never repented properly, therefore they do NOT have the Life of Christ indwelling their souls.
Disclaimer 1: When quoting a historical person I’m not advocating any or all of their doctrines and belief systems, unless of course it is Jesus. I’m merely pointing out their unity with the scriptures on true Holiness.
Disclaimer 2: The historical figures that I cite here have either ‘seen’ in the scripture the necessity for living a holy and pure life, they insist upon it in their preaching, and/or they have personally experienced ‘being set free from their own Sin’ in a practical way. I’m not advocating their journey, or methods they used to come to this true end result, I’m only pointing to the end result.
Note: But I want to warn everyone that the scripture should be our main course of study, especially what Jesus taught, and not the deep study of the lives and teachings of these historical men and women. Far too much time has been wasted in studying these historical figures and in the end it doesn’t really matter what they said, it only matters what Jesus said. He is our judge! If these historical lives can encourage us on our way, then that has benefit, but to waste inordinate amounts of time dissecting their lives and sermons is worthless. We need to go to the words of Jesus. Read all the ‘red letters’ and write down how many times Jesus speaks of Sin, Hell, repentance, forsaking one’s life holiness, righteousness, freedom from Sin. Then memorise all these passessages, and then teach on them, and then write about them. Now go on to Paul, then Peter, then John, use the same categories and do the same things. Then compare them to what is being taught in the modern church. You will conclude, ‘Houston we have a problem!’ After studying the New Testament in this fashion, you also will have no time or interest in deeply studying these historical figures – two birds killed with one stone.
What is the Evidence of being ‘Born again’?
The true Evidence that one is ‘Born again’ is that they will be delivered from the dominion of Sin to live a holy and pure life. If a person continues in Sin or wrestles with Sin, they have not been Born again, but they are merely a ‘professor of Christianity’ who is trying to be a christian. When one has the life of Christ indwelling them, they have the power to overcome temptation and Sin always.
1Jn 3:6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
1Jn 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit Sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot Sin, because he is born of God.
Rom 6:18 Being then made free from Sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
Eph 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
1Th 4:7 For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.
Rom 8:10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of Sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
1Jn 5:18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.
